Four years ago, I decided to build a business with two other co-founders. We wanted to change the world by helping coaches scale their businesses because they struggled so much with marketing, technology and sales.

We did all the usual stuff like creating landing pages, setting up a webinar funnel and running Facebook ads. And none of it worked, even though we'd done this for so many other coaches and other small businesses in the past...

So we went back to the drawing board and figured out that our audience was on LinkedIn (most audiences are!) and that with some external training, a solid strategy and lots of elbow grease we should be able to make enough connections to drive people to book calls with us so we can talk to them about how we can help them.

We went old school. We reached out directly to our target audience to talk to them and tell them how we could help them. It was slow and it was hard work but before too long, people started responding and wanting to know more. And because we were creating a personal connection with them, they were booking calls and showing up more engaged and more qualified than we'd experienced in the past. We were on to something!

All of a sudden, things started to really work. Initially, it was just the three of us, connecting with people and booking calls. Soon we hired a VA to help with some of the backend stuff and realised we had to set up some systems and processes so we could scale further.

So that's what I did. And with just the 4 of us we started making some big numbers. Over $100K per month in fact! And that was with no ad spend whatsoever.

Lots of other people out there were using similar strategies at the time. Automated bots were the flavour of the day and I'll be honest - we tried them! But they brought us a lot of unwanted leads and a LOT of trouble with LinkedIn. I even got my account suspended for doing this! Not to mention how many people we upset along the way with all those generic messages...

We quickly figured out that authentic connection was the way to go so that's what we focussed on. I created systems to enable us to build personal connections at scale and with authenticity, something no one else was doing at the time.

Fast-forward to today and this approach on LinkedIn still accounts for about 70% of sales in that business.
